Hearing Impairment is a disability that cannot be cured. But we can overcome this disability through sincere training and practice. But for such training, we need assistance and guidance from experts. A hearing-impaired child studying in NISH, preschool may receive directions from the school itself. They will also get the perfect guidance from the experiential knowledge of their predecessors who have trodden the same path in their life.
The Early Intervention Centre of NISH has started such a programme named 'Parent Support Group'. Some of the parents who have sincerely guided and helped their hearing-impaired children to overcome the barriers of language acquisition are coming forward to guide their successors.
You can have a discussion with them anytime, share your sorrows, ask for directions or your doubts.
They are there to support you, to understand you...
Parent Support Group
Parents play a vital role in the early habilitation/rehabilitation process. They need to be in the right frame of mind and be empowered to actively get involved in the rehabilitation process. A higher level of parental stress gives less positive outcome from early intervention programmes for children with disabilities, whereas early intervention for children with disabilities are more successful when family problems, parental stress included, are addressed before intervention programmes begin.
STEPP was originated in July 2015, with the financial assistance of SID (State initiatives of Disabilities). We are striving to achieve positive transformations in the perception of parents of children with disabilities by providing timely support when their child is identified with the disability and also acting as a catalyst to empower them to become the best resource person for their children.

SUCCESS STORY
Parvathi Sujith was brought to NISH when she was three years oldsuspecting hearing loss. Having diagnosed with hearing loss, she was fitted with hearing aid. She stepped into the world of sounds but the world of sound was strange and perplexing for her. Not even having heard even her mother’s lullaby before, neither speech nor language made sense to her.The timely support and intervention that she received from NISH and her mother’s untiring efforts changed her story. In a span of 3 months, Parvathi began to show marked progress. By the time, she turned 5,Parvathi acquired language on par with her hearing peers.
At the age of 6, Parvathi was admitted to a regular school where she successfully completed her 12 years of schooling. It would not have been possible if not for the support of her friends and teachers. There were many hurdles that she and her parents had to face, but they overcame them with the timely help and guidance from NISH. She passed 10thstandard with flying colors and has developed skills in co-curricular activities such as painting and story writing. Initially she had language issues with English but was able to pick up in no time and secured good result in her10+2 examinations. Currently she is pursuing B.Arch.
Parvathi, who is now 19, does not despair in the face of adversity. Her parents believe she is indeed blessed and have immense faith that she will achieve her goals and move forward in life. We at NISH take immense pride in sharing her success story and will continue with our efforts to bring out more “Parvathi’s” from among the population at EIP program.

The dual language program is an approach towards developing language proficiency in deaf children in Indian Sign language and spoken language(Malayalam/English) with an emphasis on literacy. In the dual language program lessons are delivered in Indian sign language as well as in the chosen spoken language. It is important that the parents /caregivers have accepted their child’s use of sign language and become comfortable signers themselves and encourage communication in sign language at home.
