Before retiring as Head of the Department of English of the Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, Prof P. Vijaya Kumar taught English at different Government colleges in Kerala. He thinks that in our rapidly changing world English is a vital skill and an agent of empowerment, especially for disadvantaged groups, and has been keen on activities connected with the teaching of English. He was the founder president of ACERS (The Arts College English Rhetoric Society) from 1983 to 1987 and teacher-guide of The Tin Drums, Government College for Women from 1987 to 1991, both of which were involved in meaningful extra-curricular activities. Two note-worthy programmes he has initiated and conducted are 'The English Audio Club' and 'PVK's Beyond the Syllabus Programme'. The English Audio Club was an activity that sought to teach English, and ideas about history and culture, through a structured exposure to recordings of poems, songs and similar material. It was conducted for ten years, first at The Government Victoria College, Palakkad and later at The Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram. 'PVK's Beyond the Syllabus Programme' was an elaborate, structured teaching scheme carried out at the Government College for Women between 2008 and 2011. It offered guided exposure, in a digital language lab, to a range of audio and written material, from lessons in basic English to those appropriate to PG level studies. As teacher/resource-person Prof P. Vijaya Kumar occasionally holds quizzes, gives lectures, conducts workshops on English Language Teaching and, on rare occasions, writes. (He authored the lead article in the Manorama Yearbook 2011 on English.) Prof. Vijaya Kumar serves as mentor as well as resource person with HEFP as well as other departments at NISH. |
